Creating Your Own Seamless Background Patterns Using Stable Diffusion

Have you been wandering how do people use AI to generate images?

We won`t go into details with setting up Stable Diffusion in this tutorial, but I will leave links for tutorials and guides, which I used to set things up on my computer.

Some general steps you will need before proceeding:

  • Make sure you have a graphics card with at least of 4GB or RAM
  • Follow the tutorial by Olivio Sarikas to install Stable Diffusion 2.1 (check links at the end of this article)
  • Visit civitai.com to find awesome models that lets you create images in different styles (not necessary)
  • Start making seamless patterns.

Once Stable Diffusion is installed and ready, you should see a page like this.

You will see different information in "Stable Diffusion Checkpoint" field. That is because in this example I'm using a custom model from civitai.com. So if you are trying the same prompt and getting different results, that's why.

Creating A Single Seamless Pattern Using Stable Diffusion

For this demo we will write in prompt:

"Japan landmarks travel touring and explorers, contemporary commercial art spot illustration in the style of Thom Wasselmann and Terry Pastor, minimalist airbrush art painting clean spot color, isolated on whites, isolated on greys with fluorescent neon spray paint airbrush accents typographic soft puffy fluffy visceral graphic design volumetric octane render iconographic minimalism".

We will choose "Euler" a with 20 sampling steps (it's usually enough for Euler), check "Tiling" option and voila, here's our first photo. You can experiment with settings as you see fit. I would only recommend to use the same resolution model is trained on, so if your model is trained on 512x512, use that. Setting up larger values will often produce unrealistic results.

It has created a perfect seamless image, let's stack 4 of them to see it better.

Stable Diffusion Generated Seamless Pattern Image

This one looks decent as well, don`t you think?

In a nutshell that is it. Now you just need to figure out what sort of image you need for your next project and tell Stable Diffusion to make it for you. Good luck!
